EVREN is a non-profit organization and club at the University of Calgary that aims to help fund neurological diseases. This year we have partnered with Epilepsy Canada to focus on raising both funds and awareness for epilepsy.
As this is EVREN’s founding year, its Co-President’s, Aiza Awan and Naureen Othi found it important to focus on a disease that they had personal ties to. Naureen’s grandpa’s life was forever altered in his late 60’s when he had his first seizure. He has since been diagnosed with epilepsy and takes medication to manage his symptoms, which has allowed him to be seizure free for the last three years.
Since his diagnosis, Naureen has been researching epilepsy and was shocked to find that it is not an uncommon disease, but rather one that afflicts many people throughout the world. In fact, the estimated annual incidence is 85 per 100, 000 people from the ages of 65-69 and 81 per 100,000 people over all age groups.
The types of seizures that people with epilepsy have and their intensity vary from person to person, and not everyone is as lucky as Naureen’s grandfather. Everyday, more and more research is being conducted to find new treatments and hopefully, a cure but, this research needs substantial funds.
Any donation or sponsorship would be greatly appreciated and will help us reach our goal of raising $4000 for Epilepsy Canada. Donations or sponsorships can be made directly to Epilepsy Canada who will provide both a tax receipt and place your or your company’s name on our donation roster as well as at fundraising events.
We thank you immensely for your generosity and willingness to help us one day find a cure for epilepsy.
