Mia’s Story

In March of 2024, at the age of 15, my life took an unexpected turn with a diagnosis of epilepsy.  The diagnosis brought with it a fear of the unknown, frustration, and uncertainty about how this would shape my future.

One of the most challenging aspects has been managing the stigma surrounding epilepsy. Many people don’t fully understand the condition, assuming it always involves dramatic seizures or that it’s something that can be easily “fixed.” Living with epilepsy has taught me patience and resilience in navigating both the physical challenges and the misunderstandings of others.

Medication has played a vital role in managing my condition, but it hasn’t been a perfect solution. Finding the right balance has been a trial-and-error process. While it has helped reduce the frequency of my seizures, side effects like fatigue and difficulty concentrating are daily reminders of the challenges. Surgery hasn’t been an option for me, which means my journey is largely about managing and adapting to life with epilepsy rather than “curing” it.

Fundraising for Epilepsy Canada is my way of turning this challenge into an opportunity for positive change. Awareness and research are essential to improving the lives of those living with epilepsy and challenging the misconceptions that exist. By creating this fundraiser and donating the proceeds, I hope to raise funds and start conversations that lead to better understanding and support. This initiative is deeply personal it’s about standing up for myself and others in the epilepsy community while building hope for a better future.
