Michael’s Story
On February 29, 2019 I had my first and only seizure at the tender age of 51 years old!
Unfortunately during my seizure I had a hypoxic cardiac arrest, bit my tongue severely, was incontinent, and dislocated my shoulder! Luckily my wife of 20 years is an ICU nurse and with standing at my side. She performed CPR, got mid back, and had my daughter, who is also present, call the first responders. Due to my age and no previous history of seizures the ER staff and neurologists had to determine whether or not I of a stroke or a brain tumor. Luckily I had neither and the neurologist immediately prescribed antiepileptic medication. I had an EEG and was referred to an epileptologist for a consult whereby he diagnosed me with Genetic Generalized Epilepsy.
I was floored at the diagnosis and found it difficult to accept. Immediately after the diagnosis I was depressed, angry, and felt scared that I could have another seizure and not be as lucky next time. I was unable to drive for 6 months and had to rely on my friends and family for transportation to and from work and therapy appointments which compounded the above feelings. Anyone at any age can be affected by this disease and that is absolutely astonishing and quite frightening!
I am a Pathologists’ Assistant in a large Alberta hospital where epilepsy research is performed and I knew that I was a very lucky man. I have only had a single seizure and have mild side effects from my medication. I see surgical specimens (portions of brain) from people with epilepsy weekly and sympathize with the patient even though I will never meet them.
I am telling my story because epilepsy is very misunderstood, still stigmatized and can happen to anyone!
Thank you for all the Epilepsy Canada does for the advancement of treatments of my disease.
