Meet Bhaavna
Event Organizer & McMaster Student Living with Epilepsy
“My name is Bhaavna Awasthy, and I was diagnosed with Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy at the age of 19. Without my knowledge, I had been living with this condition for four years before receiving my diagnosis. Throughout those years, I had never thought of the possibility of me having such a diagnosis. My life has been significantly affected, from the medications to the social settings. I have found that I am no longer the person I used to be. There are many things I need to think of every day that weren't considered before. Changes have occurred. Often I find it difficult to understand that SUDEP (Sudden Unexpected Death from Epilepsy) is possible. For that, I am grateful for the support from those closest to me.
I am organizing this walk to go towards funding research on finding a cure for this invisible illness. Finding such research will allow thousands of those diagnosed with epilepsy to live more at ease. At this moment, many live in fear of a seizure occurring at any time or worry that they will experience SUDEP, including myself.”
